The Fayetteville SwampDogs won their third consecutive game on Saturday night when the downed the Forest City Owls 5-1 at McNair Field. Keith Picht was brilliant on the hill in his first appearance as a starter this season. He worked through seven innings, allowed one run and struck out seven Owls.
After falling behind 1-0, the Dogs tied things up in the fifth as Sal Giardina (Lynn) got things started with a leadoff double to left center field. He advanced to third when he tagged up on a Jacob Golliday (Francis Marion) flyout to right field, and scored on a perfectly placed bunt single by Connor Obrochta (Tampa) to knot things up at one run apiece.
Fayetteville took the lead in the seventh, when Zach Gawrych (Tampa) drove in Obrochta with a line-drive single after Obrochta stole second following a base hit of his own.
Mike Tauchman (Bradley) stole two bases in the eighth after being issued a walk, extending his league-leading total to 34 on the season. He came in on a Giardina single to make it 3-1 Dogs.
The Dogs added two insurance runs in the 9th, after John Howell (Binghamton) and Tyler Ding (Tampa) were each hit by a pitch. Tauchman came up to rip a single into right field, allowing Howell to score from second base.Tauchman then swiped his third bag of the evening, giving him 35 for the season. An errant throw on the play allowed Ding to score from third and make it 5-1 Dogs.
Tyler Brunnemann (Hardin-Simmons) came on to record his tenth save of the year as he recorded the final six outs of the contest. He struck out five Owls, and still has yet to allow an earned run this season.
The next SwampDogs home game is on Tuesday, July 31st, as it's Back to School Night at "The Swamp." Young fans will receive back-to-school gifts and teachers get $1 off general admission ticket pricing.
