The Fayetteville SwampDogs defeated the Peninsula Pilots 8-1 on Saturday night, improving their second-half record to 4-2 and their overall record to 22-12 on the season. Layne Somsen (South Dakota State) was spectacular once again for the Dogs, as he worked another seven innings of shutout baseball, limiting the Pilots to just one hit during that stretch. Reed Harper (Austin Peay) got the scoring started in the second inning, when he ripped a solo home run to left field for his first long ball of the season. The Dogs made it 4-0 in the third inning, when they picked up three runs highlighted by a Sal Giardina (Lynn) RBI-triple. It was Giardina's second triple of the season and the team's 13th, the most in the Coastal Plain League this year. Mike Tauchman (Bradley) picked up an RBI groundout to get the scoring started again in the sixth inning, and Morgan Stotts (Southern Nevada) recorded an RBI when he walked with the bases loaded. The six-run lead was extended in the seventh frame, as Jacob Golliday (Francis Marion) ripped a two-run double to right center field to make it 8-0 SwampDogs. The Pilots scored a run in the eighth, but Keith Picht (Emporia State) and Jimmie Davis (UNC-Pembroke) combined to allow just one run in two innings of relief. The next SwampDogs home game is on Tuesday, July 10th, where it's Hope Mills Night at "The Swamp." Meet neighbors from Hope Mills and see what great things they have to offer. It's also Guaranteed Win Night, as fans will all be cheering for a Dogs win, but should they lose, every fan in attendance will receive a free general admission ticket to the next game.
