The SwampDogs are excited to announce the return of utility man Sal Giardina to the 2012 roster. Giardina, entering his sophomore season at Palm Beach State, will spend a second consecutive summer in Fayetteville. Known for playing anywhere on the diamond, the 6’3”, 180 lb. infielder played catcher, first base, third base and pitched for the SwampDogs in 2011. He played in 21 games, and hit .318 with nine runs scored, drove in 11 runs, and five of his 21 hits went for extra bases. He also had two strikeouts in two innings of work on the mound. Giardina is a native of Valrico, FL and attended Bloomingdale High School. In his freshman year with the Panthers, Giardina hit .333 in 53 games with five doubles and 32 RBIs, while scoring 28 runs. “We are excited to have Sal returning, he will be a valuable piece of the puzzle for us in 2012,” said SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman. “He is a quality hitter from both sides of the plate and has the ability to play multiple positions including catcher. We expect Sal to come in and continue to grow and assume a leadership role on our club.” The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, entering their 12th season in the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players a chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had more than 930 alums drafted and 45 alums make their major league debut thus far.
