Dogs Take Care of Business At Columbia Print E-mail

Fayetteville picked up right where they left off on Monday, clobbering the Columbia Blowfish by an 8-1 decision.

It took the SwampDogs less than five minutes to get their bats started. After left fielder Brian Celsi (California-Berkeley) walked in the first inning, his Golden Bear teammate drove him home with an RBI double to center field and Fayetteville jumped out to the early 1-0 lead on the road.

Michael Timm (Wright State) and DJ Hoagboon (Albany) would draw back-to-back walks and the SwampDogs would follow that up by tacking on four more runs with two outs to give them a 6-0 lead after the first half inning.

Jacob Spring (Coffeyville Community College) drove in Kranson with a single to right and John Rooney (Siena) followed up his at-bat with a two RBI double down the left field line. Before his first at-bat as a SwampDog, Adam Walton (Illinois) looked back to Jimmie Davis (UNC-Pembroke) and Ryan Busch (Georgetown) in the dugout and mouthed, “This is my first game in three months. I’m anxious.”

He followed that comment by driving a two-strike count to straight away center field to score Spring and Rooney.

The SwampDogs followed it up with a run in the second after Timm drove Derek Gibson (Southeast Missouri) to third on a textbook single to right. A few pitches later, Timm took stole second with ease but the throw sailed into shallow center, allowing Gibson to score.

Starting pitcher Garrett Baugh started the evening off extremely strong. He had five strikeouts after two innings of work and the offense helped him cruise to pick up the win. Baugh threw six innings of shutout baseball.

The SwampDogs tacked on one more run in the fifth and Geoff Soja relieved Baugh in the seventh inning and allowed one run to make it 8-1. The Niagara University pitcher would close out the game, tossing three innings and striking out a couple.

The CPL-leading SwampDogs return to Fayetteville Wednesday night for a game against the Wilmington Sharks.

Former SwampDog Home Run Derby Finalst Print E-mail

One year after spending a summer at “The Swamp,” Ball State’s Blake Beemer is one of the 15 finalists to compete in the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby.

The Fan’s Choice Award recognizes college baseball players who inspire their team, school and community through their teamwork, leadership and integrity.

The outfielder graduated with a Bachelors in Business Administration and a 3.64 GPA. Beemer is currently pursuing his Masters in Business Administration.

Beemer was the first three-year captain for head coach Rick Maloney and he worked as a player-intern for the SwampDogs in 2012.

He lead the entire Ball State student body in “student rewards points,” which he earned for attending the most athletic events. The Dayton, Ohio native was active in serving his community throughout his four year college tenure and he was a member of Ball State’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Beemer recently completed his senior year with the Cardinals where he had a career .296 average and finished his senior season with two home runs and 30 RBIs. He led the Ball State team with 16 doubles so he picked up right where he left off with the SwampDogs.

Last summer, Beemer played in a team-high 49 games where he had four extra base hits and 24 RBIs.

You can vote for Beemer on Facebook and the winner will be decided on July 4th.

Fayetteville Sends Wilson to the Dog Pound Print E-mail

The SwampDogs’ bats ignited for 15 runs against the Wilson Tobs in route to a 15-2 win and an undefeated 4-0 home record.

The Tobs had to deal with a depleted pitching staff tonight because the small staff was overworked through the first week and the SwampDogs made them pay in the first three innings with 11 hits and 11 runs.

“I mean there’s no doubt about it we’re extremely gelled for the first week and I think everyone is extremely confident in one another and not just in our lineup… but in our pitching staff,” Derek Gibson said.

Brian Celsi and Mitchell Kranson were competing for the team lead in RBIs and doubles all evening as they struck in the first with back-to-back singles up the middle. Jacob Spring was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the first with one out and the rest was history.

Derek Gibson drove in the first run of the game and he finished a perfect 4-for-4 with four singles. What made the at-bats so special is how he drove the ball to all three spots in the outfield, which shows how he has a simple approach at the plate.

“Obviously every hitter’s dream pitch is on the inner half where you can pull every pitch. At this level, if you can learn how to hit the ball opposite field on those outside corner pitches and just take what they give you, you’re going to be a lot more successful,” Gibson said.

Fayetteville virtually eliminated the Tobs after taking an 11-1 lead after three innings as Chase Rader, Celsi, Kranson, Gibson and DJ Hoagboon all had at least two RBIs on the evening.

Every player in the SwampDogs lineup had at least one hit, except for center fielder Jacob Spring who finished with two walks and two runs.

University at Albany pitcher Kevin Archbold was lock down on the mound. After making only two starts during his junior year, he tossed seven innings, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out five in his first start for the Dogs.

In the eighth inning, Celsi drove a two-out double down the right field line to drive in two runs, giving him five RBIs at “The Swamp” to tie the 2013 single-game record for most RBIs by one player in a game. Celsi and his University of California teammate Kranson are batting a combined .408 with six doubles and 15 RBIs.

The SwampDogs play three out of their next four games on the road and Tuesday night is the first showdown between the Columbia Blowfish since losing to them in the 2012 Petitt Cup Championship.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. SwampDogs Walk-Off in Dramatic Fashion To Claim Share For First Print E-mail

After nearly losing the game in the top of the ninth, Mitchell Kranson stole the game back for the SwampDogs without even swinging the bat.

Fayetteville beat the undefeated Wilson Tobs 4-3 on a walk-off walk to put them in a tie for first place in the Coastal Plain League East Division.

Micah Wells threw one and two-thirds innings for the Tobs in the eighth and ninth before he was pulled after loading the bases with back-to-back walks and throwing a 3-0 count to Kranson.

Tobs’ head coach Austin Love made the decision to put Bobby Gazzola in the game for his fourth straight night of pitching and it took just two pitches before the game ended with Josh Catalano scoring the game-winning run.

The Dogs third baseman finished the night 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and the walk in the ninth.

The Wilson Tobs were down 3-0 heading into the eighth inning but they scrapped their way back and two costly errors by first baseman Derek Gibson kept their undefeated streak alive. Gibson dropped a major-league pop up in foul territory and then muffed a routine groundout at first that would have ended the game.

The next batter, Ridge Gonsoulian tattooed a fastball for a two-RBI double to right field to tie the game at three with two outs in the ninth.

One story that will be overlooked is that in front of a firework crowd of 3,692 fans, Jimmie Davis threw five and two-thirds flawless innings, allowing just three hits and no runs. Davis worked himself out of a jam in the first and third where there was a runner at third and just one out. Parker McDaniel won his first game of the summer season after pitching in the ninth, despite giving up the two unearned runs.

Michael Timm had a productive night at the plate for the SwampDogs as he went 3-for-4 and became the new CPL batting average leader at a .636 mark.

For the first time on the season, Wilson did not steal a base. They came into the Saturday night contest 16-for-19 on stolen base attempts but they did not have many chances to run.

The SwampDogs will enjoy a night off Sunday before returning to the Swamp on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. for a rematch against the Tobs and they will play each other three more times in the next seven days.
